UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues Presents Report to General Assembly
The UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues, Nicolas Levrat, recently presented his annual report to the General Assembly. While outlining activities of the mandate since the last report to the General Assembly, including a country visit to Tajikistan and the issuing of 72 communications. The report also focuses on the thematic issue of "institutional designs promoting minorities’ effective participation towards diverse and inclusive societies."
According to the Special Rapporteur, protecting and promoting cultural diversity is key to ensuring sustainable and resilient societies. "Self-rule for minority groups on a given territory or on some sectoral issues will de facto guarantee a certain degree of effective participation of minorities and therefore protect and promote diversity in national society,” said Levrat.
In the report, Levrat lists a number of recommendations for states aimed at protecting and promoting the identities and effective participation of persons belonging to minorities.
