UN Human Rights Committee Raises Concerns over Kurdish Minority in Syria

The UN Human Rights Committee concluded its consideration of Syria’s fourth periodic report on the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. While the Committee applauded Syria’s cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, it expressed concern over the treatment of Syria’s Kurdish minority.

The Committee noted that it had received information about violence against Kurdish communities, including detentions and ill treatment, forced marriages, and sexual violence. The Committee asked the Syria delegation to provide additional information on the status of persons belonging to Kurdish, as well as Yazidi minorities. It also asked whether Syria intends to take measures to ensure equality and integration for these minority communities.
